What are the best flagpole lights for an RV?
For proper illumination that honors the U.S. Flag Code, 12V DC-powered LED downlights are the gold standard. Unlike cheap solar alternatives that dim quickly, a 12V system provides consistent, high-lumen brightness directly from your RV’s power, ensuring “Old Glory” is respectfully visible all night long.
Honoring the Colors: Why Lighting Your RV Flagpole Matters
For the patriotic RVer, the sight of the stars and stripes waving outside the rig is the ultimate symbol of freedom. Whether you are boondocking in the Arizona desert or gathered with the community at Quartzfest, flying your flag is a point of pride.
At Hitched4fun, we’ve spent over 30 years on the road. We know that for many of us, our campsite isn’t just a place to park; it’s a temporary home where we practice Connection, Adventure, and Presence—the three pillars of our Memory Triangle™. Properly lighting your flag at night isn’t just a “gear upgrade”; it’s a sign of respect.

Is it Illegal to Fly a Flag at Night Without a Light?
This is one of the most common questions we hear at rallies. Technically, there are no “flag police” who will hand you a ticket. However, the U.S. Flag Code (Section 6a) is very clear:
“It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset… however, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”
To a veteran or a patriotic traveler, “properly illuminated” means the flag should be recognizable to a casual observer. If your light is too dim to see the stars and stripes from the road, you aren’t following the spirit of the Code.
The 12V DC Advantage: Why We Don’t Settle for “Cheap” Solar
If you’ve browsed big-box retailers or Amazon, you’ve seen the “solar disc” lights that sit on top of a pole. While they are convenient, they often fail the patriotic RVer for three reasons:
- The “Dim-Out” Factor: Most solar lights rely on small internal batteries. After a cloudy day or during the long nights of winter camping, these lights often die by midnight.
- Light Pollution vs. Respect: Many solar lights cast a wide, weak glow. Our 12V LED Flag Pole Downlight uses a focused beam to put the light exactly where it belongs—on the flag—not into your neighbor’s bedroom window.
- Durability: In our three decades of testing gear, we’ve seen cheap plastic solar housings crack after one season of UV exposure. Our 12V systems are built for the rigors of the road.
Pro-Tip from the Road: If you want a “set it and forget it” beacon, our Infinity Bluetooth Camp Locator allows you to change colors and brightness from your phone, making it the ultimate tool for finding your rig in a sea of white campers.

How Many Lumens Do I Need for an RV Flagpole?
On a standard 20 to 25-foot RV flagpole, you don’t need the 20,000 lumens required for a commercial building. However, you do need enough “throw” to reach from the top of the pole down to the fabric.
- For Ground-Up Lighting: You typically need 1,000+ lumens to overcome distance.
- For Downlighting (Top-Mounted): Because the light is inches from the flag, 300–600 high-quality lumens are often more effective than a 2,000-lumen light on the ground.
Weather and Respect: When to Bring Old Glory Inside
While our lights are weather-resistant, your flag is a textile. At Hitched4fun, we believe in a “Safety and Respect First” policy. * Rainy Weather: We do not recommend flying your flag in the rain. Even “all-weather” flags can become heavy and stressed. Out of respect for the flag, it is best to remove the flagpole, flags, and lights when the weather turns sour.
- High Winds: You don’t always have to pack it away in a breeze. A pro-tip we’ve used for years: Don’t extend the entire pole. By only extending one or two sections of your telescoping pole, you lower the center of gravity and reduce the “whip” effect, allowing you to fly your colors safely for longer.
What’s the Story with the Gold Ball?
You’ll notice most high-quality flagpoles (including our kits) feature a chrome or gold ball at the top, technically known as a “truck.” There is an old military myth that the gold ball contains a razor blade, a match, and a bullet to be used in the event the post is overrun. While that makes for a great campfire story, the truth is more practical: The ball shape prevents the flag from getting tangled on the top of the pole when the wind shifts. It’s a functional piece of design that has become a symbol of a “finished” and respectful display.
